Understanding Personality Disorders

Long-standing patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour

Formerly referred to as character disorders, personality disorders involve rigid and ongoing patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. The underlying beliefs that contribute to these patterns are known as “maladaptive schemas”. Because these patterns are persistent and difficult to change, they can affect relationships, social connection, work and everyday functioning.

How Schema Therapy can help create meaningful change

Personality disorders are characterised by enduring patterns of inner experience and behaviour that differ markedly from cultural expectations. These patterns can often be traced back to childhood or adolescence. At LifeConnexions, our therapists are trained and experienced in Schema Therapy, an approach that helps people understand and change deeply established patterns.
